Hull General Cemetery
Hull’s privately-created General Cemetery which opened in late April 1847 has a multilayered history which covers many aspects of daily British life. It was laid out by John Shields who was also the first superintendent of York Cemetery. The cemetery closed in 1972 and Hull City Council took over its maintenance. Within Hull General Cemetery are several notable monuments and burials, including a one to the cholera outbreak of 1849 when 1,834 people died.
