The Friends of Hull General Cemetery
Working to create an oasis for the community in the heart of the city

The Friends of Hull General Cemetery Facebook group was formed to promote and celebrate the unique historical and environmental attributes of the cemetery. It is the ‘Friends’ intention to try and turn this long-overgrown and disused burial ground into a place which can once more be enjoyed by all in the local neighbourhood. We hope to achieve this over time by clearing-up the graves and headstones, by encouraging the diversity of flora and wildlife, by promoting historical research, and most importantly of all by getting and keeping local people and organisations involved in its upkeep.

Without the work of ‘Friends’ volunteers none of this would be possible

Our goals would not be achievable without the marvelous input of time, energy, and ideas by our members and volunteers who throughout the year (and whatever the weather) make themselves available to help in the upkeep and ongoing improvements of the cemetery and its overall environment.

Our hard work is making a difference

The work done by Friends of Hull General cemetery is already making a difference; with incidences of drug-dealing and other anti-social behaviour such as fly-tipping showing a decline as more people use the cemetery for dog-walking and general leisure thanks to the clearing and tidying of overgrown-areas. We believe that the more the cemetery is used by the community the less likely it is that some people will choose to abuse it.
